This advocacy paper, developed by the Global Alliance against Chronic Respiratory Diseases (GARD), calls for urgent and coordinated action to reduce the burden of chronic respiratory diseases (CRDs) worldwide.
Building on evidence compiled in the background paper, it translates scientific findings into five clear priorities for decision-makers: 1) take action to address CRDs, 2) foster multisectoral partnerships, 3) strengthen primary care for CRDs, 4) ensure access to essential medicines, and 5) invest in research and data to drive policy. CRDs are a leading cause of ill-health and premature death, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, yet remain under-prioritised in global health agendas. This paper presents concise, actionable messages to guide governments, international agencies and civil society. It stresses the importance of prevention, early diagnosis, equitable access to treatment, and reducing exposure to risk factors such as tobacco use and air pollution. Designed as an accessible tool for advocacy, the paper equips stakeholders with practical entry points for change. It encourages collaboration across sectors and calls on policy-makers to integrate CRDs into broader strategies for universal health coverage and noncommunicable disease control. The advocacy paper is intended to support dialogue, inspire action and mobilise resources towards a world where all people can breathe freely.
