ISTH's World Thrombosis Day 2025: From Head to Toe, Take Control

Every year on 13 October, the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) leads World Thrombosis Day (WTD), a global campaign dedicated to raising awareness of thrombosis, comm

only known as blood clots. Thrombosis is a leading cause of death and disability worldwide, contributing to the deaths of 1 in 4 people each year.

The 2025 campaign theme, “From Head to Toe, Take Control: Prevent Thrombosis, Protect Your Health,” emphasizes the critical links between blood clots and major chronic conditions such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes and obesity. Thrombosis, arterial and venous, is the underlying cause of the world’s top three cardiovascular killers, heart attack, stroke and venous thromboembolism (VTE), yet public awareness remains alarmingly low.

World Thrombosis Day calls for urgent action to:

  • Increase understanding of the risks, signs and symptoms of thrombosis.
  • Empower people to speak with healthcare providers about prevention and treatment.
  • Strengthen health systems to better prevent, diagnose and treat VTE and atrial fibrillation (AFib).
  • Mobilize organizations worldwide to deliver aligned, impactful awareness efforts.

The ISTH encourages hospitals, institutions, and organizations worldwide to join this year’s campaign. With free, translated resources available, it’s easy for any group to take part and spread lifesaving awareness. By connecting the fight against thrombosis to broader health priorities, World Thrombosis Day underscores that preventing clots is not only simple and actionable, but also a powerful pathway to stronger cardiovascular health globally.
