UNGA78 | Towards Achieving Universal Health Coverage: Multistakeholder Gathering on Tackling Noncommunicable Diseases

Breaking boundaries, building bridges through sustainable multisectoral and multistakeholder collaboration

Virtual conference

On the occasion of the second annual Gathering of the Global Group of Heads of State and Government for the prevention and control of Noncommunicable Diseases (NCDs) for the Global NCD Compact, to be held in the margins of the UN High-level Meeting on Universal Health Coverage (UHC) 2023, WHO, NCD Alliance and the World Diabetes Foundation will co-host the second Multistakeholder Gathering to Accelerate Action on SDG 3.4 and UHC.

Spurring progress towards reducing premature mortality from NCDs and achieving UHC

Only a handful of countries are on track to reduce by one third the premature mortality from noncommunicable diseases by 2030 and meet SDG target 3.4.  WHO has identified and provides cost-effective and affordable solutions to curb NCDs, including the best-buys and other recommended interventions. Pathway analyses in the NCD Countdown 2030 report showed that, in 2021, all countries still had opportunities for achieving SDG target 3.4 by 2030.

The Global Group of Heads of State and Government and the Global NCD Compact 2020-2030

The multi-year aim of the Global Group of Heads of State and Government for the prevention and control of NCDs, launched in April 2022, is to accelerate progress towards SDG 3.4 and achieving universal health coverage through SDG 3.8 by 2030.

At their first annual Gathering, on the occasion of the 77th High-level General Debate of the United Nations General Assembly in 2022, the Global Group of Heads of State and Government committed to the Global NCD Compact and offered strategic leadership to promote greater policy coherence and coordination through whole-of-government approach and engaging with non-State actors in an appropriate, coordinated, comprehensive and integrated response. This year, their second Gathering will mark the kick-off of the Global Week for Action on NCDs, a multistakeholder campaign calling for integration of NCDs into UHC packages.

Multisectoral action for a whole-of-government approach

The Multistakeholder Gathering will feature the launch of the WHO Global mapping report on multisectoral actions to strengthen the prevention and control of noncommunicable diseases and mental health conditions, coordinated by the Global NCD Platform Department, showcasing how countries are implementing multisectoral actions across government sectors and engaging with diverse stakeholders.
