A new technical report from WHO and the European Respiratory Society (ERS) highlights the persistent burden and inequities associated with chronic respiratory diseases (CRDs) in the WHO European Region. Despite reductions in CRD mortality, COPD and asthma continue to drive the disease burden, with COPD accounting for nearly 80% of CRD-related deaths. The report projects a 23% global increase in COPD cases by 2050, especially affecting women and people in low- and middle-income countries.
It emphasizes wide disparities across the Region, with high CRD prevalence in western areas and elevated hospitalization and mortality in the east. The document provides actionable policy options, essential interventions, and country examples to support integrated health system responses, including tobacco control, improved air quality, addressing social determinants, and strengthening surveillance and care continuity.
This publication offers a key resource for countries aiming to reduce inequities, prioritize CRD interventions, and improve quality of life for those affected.
