Advancing Noncommunicable Disease Care in Humanitarian Settings Ahead of the UN High Level Meeting 2025

This high-level WHA78 side event will bring together government representatives, humanitarian actors, civil society, and technical experts to explore strategies for strengthening the prevention and care of NCDs in humanitarian settings. In the lead-up to the 2025 UN High-Level Meeting on NCDs, the event aims to generate political momentum, share lessons learned from the field experiences, and promote practical solutions that ensure continuity of NCD care during crises.

About

NCDs are among the leading causes of death and disability globally, yet they remain critically under-prioritized in humanitarian health responses. In protracted crises and acute emergencies, disruptions to essential NCD services—including access to medicines, diagnostics, and care—can have life-threatening consequences.

This side event, convened ahead of the 2025 UN High-Level Meeting on NCDs, aims to galvanize global commitment to protect and expand NCD care in fragile and conflict-affected settings. It will feature voices from countries on the frontlines, highlight innovative models of service delivery, and reinforce the need to embed NCDs in emergency health policies and financing mechanisms. The event will also contribute to shaping the political declaration for the 2025 meeting, ensuring that people living with NCDs are not left behind in humanitarian contexts.

The collection of materials listed features key thematic resources curated by the event’s co-organizers, highlighting the importance of prioritizing NCD care in humanitarian settings within the global health agenda. These materials are intended to inform and guide policymakers, practitioners, and partners in ensuring that the voices, needs, and lived experiences of people living with NCDs are meaningfully represented in the UN Political Declaration to be adopted at the 2025 High-Level Meeting on NCDs.
