International Thalassaemia Day 2026: Campaign Resources Now Available and Global Activities Underway

International Thalassaemia Day (ITD) is observed every year on 8 May, bringing together the global health community to raise awareness about thalassaemia, promote prevention and early diagnosis, and advocate for equitable access to quality care for affected individuals worldwide.

The Thalassaemia International Federation (TIF) is pleased to share further updates on the International Thalassaemia Day 2026 global awareness campaign, led under the theme:

“Hidden No More: Finding the Undiagnosed. Supporting the Unseen.”

Thalassaemia is a group of inherited blood disorders caused by genetic mutations that reduce or prevent the production of haemoglobin — the oxygen-carrying protein in red blood cells. It includes several forms, primarily α- and β-thalassaemia, which range from mild conditions to severe transfusion-dependent disease. Without timely diagnosis and appropriate care, reduced haemoglobin production leads to chronic anaemia and serious health complications, including even premature death.

The ITD 2026 campaign highlights two urgent global challenges: the large number of people affected by the lack of early screening and diagnosis, and the reality that many individuals already living with thalassaemia remain unseen and insufficiently supported, often overlooked by health systems and marginalized within their communities.

To raise awareness and mobilize global action, the campaign includes several key initiatives hosted on the ITD 2026 campaign platform. “Bring Thal to Light” invites cities and communities to illuminate landmarks in red as a symbol of solidarity. “Your Journey, Your Story” encourages people affected by thalassaemia to share their experiences with diagnosis and care. Organisations worldwide are also invited to organise awareness and advocacy initiatives and feature them on the Global Activities Map, strengthening international engagement.

To support advocacy and awareness efforts, TIF has made official campaign resources available through the International Thalassaemia Day website. These materials are open to any organisation, institution, healthcare professional, patient group, or individual wishing to support International Thalassaemia Day and the global thalassaemia patient community.

Through International Thalassaemia Day 2026, TIF and the global thalassaemia community continue to work toward a future where every person affected by the condition is recognized, counted, and cared for.
