Parliamentarians for Diabetes Global Network
A high-level Parliamentary Advocacy Forum convened in Malta brought together Members of Parliament, global health experts, and diabetes advocates to drive legislative action for stronger diabetes prevention, care, and equitable access. Organized by the Parliamentarians for Diabetes Global Network (PDGN), the forum highlighted the urgent need for policy reforms that address the realities faced by people living with diabetes across regions.
Former UK Prime Minister Theresa May shared her personal journey with type 1 diabetes, emphasizing how technologies such as continuous glucose monitoring have transformed disease management. She urged policymakers to expand access to these tools worldwide, particularly in settings where affordability and availability remain major barriers.
Meethi Zindagi’s Executive Director, Dr. Sana Ajmal (PhD, CDE)—who also serves as the Secretary General of PDGN—led key discussions focused on technology innovation, health system strengthening, and equity in diabetes care. During the session, she emphasized the need for “a global cooperation mechanism between governments to improve access to insulin and diabetes technology in low- and middle-income countries.”
In the event’s plenary session, Dr. Sana Ajmal was photographed seated alongside Baroness Theresa May in the Maltese Parliament, symbolizing a united commitment to advancing global diabetes advocacy.
The insights and commitments from this forum are expected to translate into tangible policy actions that strengthen access to life-saving diabetes medicines, technologies, and high-quality care for all people living with diabetes—regardless of geography or socioeconomic status.
