Electronic nicotine delivery systems, such as e-cigarettes, have been heavily marketed as safer alternatives to conventional cigarettes, fueling the misconception that such products are harmless.
However, evidence shows that electronic cigarettes are far from innocuous, particularly to the heart. Their aerosols contain harmful substances typically found in tobacco smoke, along with new toxicants unique to e-cigarettes.
In the absence of regulation, e-cigarettes threaten hard-won progress in tobacco control. The World Heart Federation calls on countries to adopt precautionary measures to protect public health and counter misleading narratives. Our policy brief outlines key actions needed to safeguard populations, especially youth.
