Diabetics and Mental health patients in the Eastern part of Ghana have high default rate because they live in a state of constant denial which prevents them from seeking the necessary intervention as required and this has contributed to high incidence of morbidity, mortality and poor state of their mental health. Long distances to access medical services, and improper storage of medications are other challenges faced by these NCD community in Ghana.
The Community Integrated NCD Empowerment Project aims to empower patients and their families by leveraging local resources, promoting self-care, and reducing reliance on health professionals. The intervention tackles denial through case conferences, telemedicine, school programs, and one-on-one counseling; with the goal of reducing treatment costs, improving accessibility, and enhancing mental health.
So far, Ark Development Organization has already identified 2,026 suspected diabetes cases with possible mental health challenges, with 50% of them accessing medication and sharing their stories.
