Co-creating priorities for cancer 2030 with people affected by cancer and emergent leaders

Convening at the World Health Organization (WHO) to develop a draft joint statement of priorities

In 2022, WHO launched the global campaign to amplify the voices of those affected by cancer as part of WHO’s framework for meaningful engagement of people living with noncommunicable diseases (PLWNCDs). The campaign aimed to support the realization of inclusive, people-centred policies and health services focused on and organized around the health needs and expectations of people and communities affected by cancer. WHO believes in developing the capacity of emergent leaders to drive change through empathetic leadership which places people and their lived experience of cancer at the centre of priority setting, policy design and health service planning. This meeting will bring together a group of dynamic emergent leaders and people with lived experiences of cancer in a simulation of diplomatic deliberations where they will jointly co-create priorities for cancer care.

The overall goal of this WHO-led event is to provide an opportunity for the community affected by cancer and emergent leaders to rally around a global agenda to support Member States in their development of cancer policies. The approach used will emphasize the importance of developing priorities using the WHO framework for meaningful engagement of PLWNCDs.

The objectives of the meeting are to:

  • contribute to the advancement of WHO’s global campaign to amplify the voices of those affected by cancer;
  • co-develop cancer priorities based on lived experiences to inform cancer care policies in countries;
  • develop global leadership skills in people-centred cancer care priority setting.

This session will expand emergent leaders’ experiential learning on how to engage meaningfully with people and communities affected by cancer and will extend their understanding of people-centred care; where the perspectives of individuals, families, communities and society are prioritized in shaping health policy and health services. It will also enhance the advocacy skills among people with lived experience in cancer. The structure of the session will closely resemble that of the World Health Assembly, where participants will engage in deliberations which will culminate in a draft statement of priorities.

Participants: We look forward to hosting a maximum of 120 participants comprising people with lived experience of cancer and emergent leaders from WHO’s network of strategic partners.
