Clean Air, Smart Cities, Healthy Hearts: Action on Air Pollution for Cardiovascular Health

Air pollution is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, contributing to an estimated 6.7 million deaths worldwide in 2019 - half of which were due to heart disease and stroke.

Fine particulate matter and other pollutants infiltrate the bloodstream, damaging blood vessels, raising blood pressure, and increasing the likelihood of heart attacks and strokes.

Despite its significant health burden, awareness among policymakers and healthcare professionals remains limited, resulting in insufficient action. Our policy brief summarizes the latest evidence, outlines effective policy measures, and highlights the critical role of healthcare professionals in reducing the burden of air pollution.
