Atrial fibrillation (AFib) is a common type of arrhythmia, or irregular heartbeat. Because the heart beats and contracts irregularly, blood flow may slow or pool and cause the formation of a clot. A blood clot that forms as a result of AFib is an example of arterial thromboembolism. If that clot breaks free, it can lodge in an artery, travel to the brain and result in a stroke. Download this infographic for an overview of AFib.
