The Second WHO Global Conference on Air Pollution and Health concluded in Cartagena, Colombia, with powerful commitments from over 50 countries, cities, and organizations to tackle air pollution and protect health. Convened with the Government of Colombia, the event gathered more than 700 participants from 100 countries, including heads of state, UN agencies, civil society, and scientists.
A shared goal was set to reduce health impacts from air pollution by 50% by 2040. New pledges include strengthening air quality monitoring, advancing clean energy, and updating national air standards based on WHO guidelines. Countries like Colombia, Spain, the United Kingdom, India, Brazil, and China announced bold national actions, while cities and civil society called for stronger partnerships and investments.
WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus emphasized the urgency of moving from commitments to action to achieve clean air for all. With this momentum, the global community is poised to translate pledges into meaningful change that saves lives.
